You are probably on to at least one reason for problems with computer-based servers. Some purpose-built audio servers go to an extreme amount of trouble to isolate the DAC and analogue stages from RFI from other parts/function of the server. For example, the Naim NDS (the server I own) has thoroughly shielded sections, and uses optical coupling between certain sections to keep RFI out of those sections.
