Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Pretty typical results, mostly due to spdif vs. usb sound signatures

Schiit makes some INcredible value/price products; I don't know how they can sell a DAC like Bifrost with asynch USB and discrete analogue output for that price..

Even in a fairly-optimized spdif vs. usb comparison, spdif will tend to have more upper frequency "sparkle" (and "digititis" on certain recordings) and more crunch, punch, and apparent tightness in bass. This will benefit many systems that lean towards a bit too-smooth, languid personality.

Good USB will fight back with more smoothness, continuousness (not to mention ease of access to music), "analogue" tonality, but to bring up its apparent air, sparkle, immediacy, and punch takes quite a bit of work and money unfortunately. Even then, it doesn't sound like spdif, but it's not meant to be. Heck, if it wasn't for that immediate access to all my music, I wouldn't bother with PC audio and stick with good spdif, better yet I2S, actually probably one-box CDP.
