In retrospect, I do think that the lack of a rich midrange is probably endemic to the design of the SMSL, and probably the result of the choice of op-amp. My mod'ing is probably over -- too much effort.

Ultimately, I realized that there are many factors, such as transport, for instance, that can effect one's enjoyment significantly.
