Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

SMSL vs. Schitt Modi vs. Schiit Bifrost

I've had all three: the SMSL DL1955, Schiit Modi, and the Schiit Bifrost, both standard and Uber analog versions.

The SMSL is a decent DAC for it's low price, having a resolved, detailed sound, though it will seem a little bright to some ears depending on associated equipment, etc. Ths SMSL also permits opamp rolling and there are certainly better sounding opamps than the standard NE5532.

The Modi is a smoother, mellower sounding, quite "musical" DAC that many will prefer over the SMSL. OTOH, detail and resolution are maybe a little less and top highs are a little rolled off. The Modi is USB only; it has no S/PDIF connection.

The Bifrost/Bifrost Uber is big step up over either of the SMSL and Modi, though much more expensive, especially with USB and the Uber analog upgrade. Contrary to expectation, the Bifrost is quite different from its Modi stable mate. The Bifrost sound is more resolved and delivers fair more palpable imaging than either of the above. The Bifrost's highs are not rolled off and it is less mellow overall; this means it's better on good recordings but doesn't cut the bad ones any slack. The Bifrost Uber is very similar to the base model but a bit more refined.
