RE: Pardon my ignorance

You will only typically have one level of digital to analog conversion. No redundancy. Main reason for additional DACs is because the original did not have all the inputs needed or support a particular format. Today most good DACs have all inputs though many pre-amps with integrated DACs will likely be missing USB (though more and more support USB). In that case, USB conversion is required.
