The DAC in a preamp may be for folks who want a way to play music files and not have to bother with an external DAC. (same as for years folks had the phono pre inside the basic preamp)
As for digital speakers.. another way to do stuff.
Then nothing needed except a digital source with volume control..
Everything else is in speakers. No preamp, no amp. simplicity.

Just like some folks want separate preamp and amp. and others want them combined in an integrated.
For years the integrated was totally out of favor. And now it is coming back as a popular form.
