RE: 24/96 A to D converter (real time hardware) anything good out there that costs under $500?

You can hope to find a used RME ADI-2 for $500, it's $949 new. B&H has something called an RDL HR-ADC1 for $585.
The ART DI/O might be your best price if you can find one. I don't find it very high fidelity myself but I keep one as a backup. Many tweaks I understand if you are into some circuit component upgrading.
Last I'll mention the NAD PP-3 which bears investigation at $199. I thought it was quite soft and hazy sounding but maybe that's me and my setup.
Add a computer to the equation and the options become endless. I like Echo Audio and Lynx products with M-Audio an honorable mention but there is plenty I don't know about and haven't heard.
