I'd guess it would be a significant upgrade too. I've not heard the current Sony but I've owned an XA-777ES, a significantly modded XA-777ES, I have a friend who has the XA-9000ES (and it's been over my house too) and I currently have a Modwright Oppo BDP-83. I've owned the Bryston CD player and sold it and bought the BDA-1 and only have it a couple of weeks. I've read reviews that the XA5400ES is better on CD than prior models but to me that isn't saying much. Not that I thought the prior models were terrible, they just were nothing special on CD. I have a 15 year old Micromega DuoPro DAC in a secondary basement system that easily best the XA9000ES on CD playback. The only thing better on the XA9000ES vs. the old DAC is the bass. Other than that the XA9000ES sounds really very ordinary on CD vs. the old DAC.
