I recently listened to the Bryston and SimAudio CD-1 cd players. I listened very critically for quite some time in my own home and both were excellent. I would describe each as dynamic, rhythmic , noiseless even through headphones, free of coloration, fatigue free, articulate bass, good tonality, and gorgeous midrange. I think that the differences between these players is very, very subtle, if there are any. I could not consistently decide if I was hearing any differences. I wound up with the Sim because I found one used for much less its current list price of $1,700.00. I recommend either one without equivocation. I intend to keep the Sim as my CD player for a long time. Considering your budget, I would go to Audiogon and get a used Bryston; it seems to be better built than the Sim with a solid aluminum front face plate, but a small display, and it has a backlit remote, which comes in handy.

If you are into computer audio and I am, then my plan is too audition the soon to be released Ayre DAC. It is USB only, but will have MP filtering and Wavelength's asynchronous data retrieval. It may be the killer DAC for those have a computer source system.
