>>Early adopters of SACD who purchased SCD-1s and SCD-777Es's were adamant that these players clearly demonstrated that there was a vast chasm between SACD and CD (which there was on these players), but moreover that CD's were only fit for the waste bin and virtually unlistenable now that SACDs were among us.<<

I was one of its biggest critics, not because it wasn't a decent sounding machine, because many within this board hyped its performance well beyond reality.

The fact is, it sounded pretty decent given good material, but in comparison to some dedicated machines, it was veiled, compressed & dynamically challenged. Also, and rarely discussed, they had a rather high noise floor which covered up low level details.

These characteristics were just as apparent in SACD mode, but the SCD1 & 777 were easily good enough machines to highlight the exceptional mastering of some SACD material - which many regarded as a "major" improvement.

IMO, these machines sounded similar in either CD or SACD mode, the so called "gap" was based on the superior mastering quality of some SACDs.
