To put some numbers on this, let's look at a hypothetical 1 meter cable with 500 pF of capacitance (quite high, just for argument's sake). At 1 kHz (middle of the audio band), the capacitive reactance would be over 300 kohms. So yes, there would be some current delivered by the output stage, but roughly 10x less than what would be delivered should a preamp be connected (depending, of course, on the input impedance -- including capacitance! -- of the preamp).
