I suggest replacing the DAC1 with a DAC1

I'm on my third DAC1 and was able to hear significant differences between each version (2004, 2006 w/ silver front, 2007 w/ USB).
Please keep in mind that many of the reviews on the internet that say something like "DAC X sounds much better than a DAC1" are based on the sound of early versions of the DAC1, which is under a continuous cycle of improvement (giving it the same cost to benefit ratio vs. the competition that it has always had, in my opinion).
By the way, I owned a Lavry DA10 between my 2nd and 3rd versions of the DAC1. It did indeed sound better than my 2006 model with the silver faceplate, but fell just a bit short of the more recent DAC1 USB that I purchased in mid 2007 (despite the fact that I was using the DA10 with the much-hyped and pricy Empirical Audio Off-Ramp Turbo 2 w/ Superclock 4 for the USB comparisons I made).
