I think many audiophiles are too equipment oriented. I suggest going back to the Benchmark, but forget the CD player. Use a computer as your digital front end with software that includes a good equalizer and other DSP effects. You can then play with the sound to you heart's content. What you are doing now, which is what I used to do, is like dimming a room light by changing bulbs. Try a dimmer switch.
