Your unit is a 12 year old design, so you can improve on the sound with a current model, no question. With that said, the original Planet had a very engaging sound and a cool aesthetic, so I would call the distributor and get an idea of the cost to repair. If under $200 and you like the sound (and there are no annoying quirks that you'd like to change), I'd say, go for it. You can always upgrade the sound later using an external DAC.
