The other companies you mention probably ONLY use the Pioneer DVD transport. The products exposed like Goldmund/Edge etc use not only the Pioneer transport but also the same DAC module and output stage pcb board, lock stock and barrel. That is, they added very little of their own circuitry other than probably a better casing or a more powerful transformer. To re-use your analogy, this is as good as finding out that the BMW not only use the same wheels as the Mazda, but also the same engine (of course it doesn't that's why you pay much more)
This is the difference between a truly re-engineered Pioneer OEM DVD based universal player and a just rebadged one.
Perhaps Charles Hanson may input further since Ayre in your opinion is lumped together with the likes of Goldmund/Edge ;-)
