Digital Drive

I am a 65 year old vinyl guy but getting more and more into downloads. I use a MAC powerbook G4. I also listen to CDs on an Audio Research CD2.

Could someone (1) define the following types of formats and give the (2) relative uses, and (3)strengths and weaknesses of each? Is there a website that could help me?

AIFF
FLAC
MP3
AAC
WAV
Apple Lossless
HDtracks
