Put like that I have to agree with you on your first point. Yes indeed, cabling can either make or mar what you hear. But the original posting is about the best DAC, not the best DAC system which may be held to include additional boxes like the transport,sample converters and master clocks and also externals like cabling or supports or for some folks even things like the Intelligent Chip or other voodoo items.

As for 16.44 v. upsampling , yes I too prefer upsampling. But for me redbook well done is not a complete write off. However as the Elgar Plus has no upsampling facility itself, then when playing redboook unaided by other items it cannot be a candidate for best DAC for you. But, on the other hand, it is also superb at DSD which does not require upsampling so it may count as a candidate for best in that mode. But I wonder if Stich's posting includes SACD?
