It's all subjective and system dependent. Also listening room dependent. My personal favorite was the Levinson 30.6. My last 6 digital front ends were:
Linn CD12
Levinson 31.5 / dCS Purcell/Elgar
Levinson 31.5/30.6
Burmester 001
Meridian 808
Wadia 861b
There was a sense of ease and space in the Levinson combo that was very engaging. I rarely had to go through my CD collection looking for well recorded discs to enjoy my system; most of my CDs sounded great. Now, with that said, I'll say the dCS gear had the greatest resolution and on well recorded discs, sounded the best.
I've been away from the high end for 3 years now, so I'm not up to date on the current offerings.
