Whilst not disputing in any way that a Wadia 9 creates a sense of space similar to vinyl replay and is a great DAC, I am sure that owners of EMM DACS will be surprised that theirs do not according to your assertion. Likewise I am strongly of the opinion that dCS Elgar and Elgar Plus owners are also likely to take issue with this.
My own daily experience with an Elgar Plus is in line with the review of the original Elgar in HiFi News years ago. To paraphrase Andrew Harrison (if I recall the author correctly) " the front wall of the room just fell away". BTW compared to a Wadia 861 I think.I also remember an old work colleague who is a "civilian" in audiophile terms hearing the dCS stack and pointing beyond my front wall while saying " I don't know where the sound's coming from but it's out there".
But I want to emphasise that not only is there depth but all the space in between is inhabited as it were. We are into the area of holography which has been well aired in AA as a concept over the past few days.
Is it like vinyl playback in any sense? Another quotation, this time from a well known UK retailer who exclusively serves the vinyl market. He doesn't even own a CDP yet described the dCS stack to me as " a revelation".
No doubt there are other candidate DACs.
As for the best - well as good as the Elgar Plus is, the new Scarlatti is supposed to cream it (check some of the online comments out there). dCS keep promising me a loan of one but I am too scared to accept. So, by implication rather than experience, the Scarlatti is my nominee.
