I am also DR-17 owner for two years - approx. 1000 hours of recording, flawlessly. Trying to see the internal building, I tried to detach the cover - and I failed, just like you. All screws were unscrew properly, of course, but the cover remained tightly on, still resistant to even a bit stronger force, untypical for removing cover plate from some unit...

Strange, indeed. Obviously there is some additional thing besides the screws that keeps the cover attached. Some glue, paste or something like that...

You should maybe use some additional force to pull the cover..??
