if you can squeeze in $100 - $200 to your budget the Arcam CD92 is the probably one of the best bang for buck USED that you can obtain from Audiogon. Another steal would be a Meridian 596 or 586 DVD player which you can get ~$500-$700.

if you like tubes, then try buying a used Ah Tjoeb! Marantz 4000 with upsampler and its less than $500.

An Arcam CD72 or CD73 or Audio Refinement Complete can also be bought at below $500 used. I've owned an Arcam CD72 and Audio Refinement complete Alpha and personally i prefer the Audio Refinement over the Arcam CD72.

As for Cambridge audio, I've read a lot of compalints about it skipping so I wouldnt go for it.
