One last suggestion (I can't stop myself). If you've decided that $500 is the limit that you want to stick to , you may have better luck with the used market. Audiophiles are infamouslly afflicted with "upgradeitis" and have no qualms about putting their expensive players up for sale at a fraction of what the retail price was so that they/we can justify spending more money on a player that may(or may not) be better than what they have. Yeah, we're nuts but we enjoy our hobby a bit too much to be more frugal !
