I know it's a pain not to be able to audition a CD player but one brand that ,IMO, is both reliable and sounds very good ( better than anything new in your price range) is Arcam.
If you could find ( Audiogon-used at dealer etc. ) an Arcam CD72 or 73 you would have a nice addition to your system.
