I have the Channel Islands VDA 2 DAC and love it. I originally was looking for an inexpensive DAC for cable and my DVD player and was tempted to buy a used DAC or the MSB Link DAC which is a little outdated. After some research I decided to set a limit of around 1k. Having already heard the Benchmark I was about to order a PS Audio Link III and see how it compared. I was ready to pull the trigger but learned that PS had switched production to China. That's when I decided to give the VDA 2 a try.

I had just completed a major upgrade of speakers, pre, and amp so considering my DVD/SACD player was the only original piece left it too needed an upgrade ! The VDA 2 really was the cherry on top. It holds it's own in a system who's components each cost several times more than it's modest price, it's that good. I know it's a little more than your budget but it includes shipping. I've been into audio for 25 + years and can honestly say that this is one of the best "bang for the buck" products I've ever purchased. It's sound and build quality are exceptional for the money. You never think you're listening to "digital", it's sweet and non-fatigueing, you can listen for hours.

I personally think it sounds better than the Benchmark, there are no switches or VRs in the signal path like the DAC 1 and the VDA uses a discrete analog output unlike the DAC 1 which uses op-amps. After owning this dac it's no surprise that DAC 1s are listed every day on a-gon while VDA-2s are seldom offered for sale. This is one of those rare components that really delivers at a price that anyone can afford. I'll be first in line for the VDA-3.
