I assume you are using the DEQ2496 in digital in / digital out mode then going from that to the Benchmark. Just for fun, try taking the analog out from the DEQ2496 instead and see how it measures up. That's how I'm using mine. Tonight I was listening to my Squeezebox in it's usual configuration, coaxial digital out to a SRC2496, upsampled to 24/96, then via optical to the DEQ2496 for equalization and D/A conversion. I tried the Squeezebox analog outputs going straight into the preamp, eliminating both Behringer units. The sound while not bad, was a little muddier and a little flatter (i.e. reduced 3-d & microdynamics). With the digital out to the Behringers it is clean and clear with good microdynamics and 3-dimensional imaging (believe it or not this was with Pandora at 128kb/sec!) . So to my ears the DAC in the DEQ2496 beats the DAC in the Squeezebox, which is not a bad DAC. I also tried 16/44 on the SRC and what this did was make the highs a little more harsh and digital sounding. At 24/96 upsampling the sound gets smoother and cleaner, more analog sounding. I have no idea why this should work but that's what I hear.
