I agree with fmak's comments about ADCs being more difficult to select than DACs. Building an accurate low noise ADC is inherently much more difficult than building a DAC. The anti-aliasing filters are critical and if done poorly will seriously corrupt the sound in the audible range, unlike the less critical situation with DACs where the ear server as a bit of a filter.

Finally we have an explanation for the proliferation of expensive DACs on the market. People are looking for some bandaid to fix the poor quality that goes into the CD mastering and pressing process.
Ridiculous to think people are paying tens of thousands to 'fix' poor recording & mastering values. And never succeeding anyway: nothing shows up on Audiogon faster than the latest and greates CD player or processor.
