"Even for casula listening, I would cautio against a $50 ADC. These are even more difficult to select than dacs."
If Sasha's TV sound is anything like the sound I get out of my cable box, then it could be sent by wet string and tin cans with no significant loss in quality. (The same goes for the FM audio on my cable system.) The SB Live 24 External is down to under $47 on Amazon.com. This was originally a $200 USB sound card and does not have bad sound. While it claims to run 24 bit at 96 Khz, it is a USB 1.1 device and can only run in this mode as a DAC or as an ADC, but not both simultaneously.I agree with fmak's comments about ADCs being more difficult to select than DACs. Building an accurate low noise ADC is inherently much more difficult than building a DAC. The anti-aliasing filters are critical and if done poorly will seriously corrupt the sound in the audible range, unlike the less critical situation with DACs where the ear serves as a bit of a filter. Finally, and this is the most important point in my opinion: if a poor ADC is used to make a recording that recording will be permanently spoiled, whereas a DAC can always be upgraded and old recordings played with good sound. However, Sasha doesn't plan to use an ADC for making recordings.
