Tony,

I am a bit confused, you mentioned passive analog gain control, how can I gain anything if it is passive?
Or is this just a term for passive pre-amp?
If I get it right, I should start with 24 bit material (I have it), and compare DACs that accept / support 24 bit word (all of them do), this would tell me if Wadia is great for its digital volume control (if I hear substantial difference between Wadia volume control and other DACs while controlling volume on PC) or Wadia is great for many other reasons?
