I sit in front of the big rig listening to Guster through yet another transport, this time the Sony Dvps-999es. This $200 player just soundly outshined a Pioneer dv-79avi, which sold for $350 on audiogon today. Its amazing what the saturated dvd player market offers up in depreciated gems like these two. Before them came the Denon dvd-2900, DVD-3800, the Marantz Sa-14 mkii and the Sa-8260. God bless audiogon for letting me buy, enjoy for several months, then sell at anywhere from little to no loss, all the way to making 50 bucks along the way. fun fun fun.

my arbitrary ratings, in no order:
1. marantz sa-14 mkii- the most musical of the bunch, serving the deepest soundstage and so-close-to-sacd resolution
2. marantz sa-8260- family sound for sure. all of the above, just not served in such ample portions. love the depth of field in these players.
3. denon 2200, 3800.- flat soundstage, uninvolving dynamics. dont miss them a bit.
4. sony 999es- love it. great resolution. IMPACT and slam in spades!!! didnt see that one coming. less sibilant than others, thanks much. great depth and transparency. very happy with this one.
5. pioneer dv-79avi- flatter soundstage but not as dead as the denons. quite a musical player in a rega-like laid-back politeness. can bore but also allows for marathon sessions with little fatigue. the sony suits me much better.
