Digital volume control versa passive pre-amp

I have been playing with various ways to connect Wadia 581i SE to the system and realized that my pre-amp is not transparent at all, Wadia sounds significantly better when connected directly to the amp, supremely natural, with wonderful unimposing details, soundstage and imaging.
I had a number of DACs without volume control to play with and wondered how good they would be if connected directly to the amp and fed digitally from my PC based transport, where I could do digital volume control on PC itself.
As a note, this is a purposely built PC based transport, completely fanless, with Lynx L22 providing digital signal.
I realized that Wadia’s digital control is far superior then any volume control in any software player on PC.
If Wadia receives digital signal from PC and I use Wadia’s volume control, it sounds incredible.
But, if I connect either Wadia at its full volume or any other DAC and do volume control on PC, the loss of resolution becomes very clear, soundstage collapses, dynamics disappear, be that either Wadia doing conversion to analog or any other DAC.
Here is my question now.
Has anyone found supremely transparent passive pre-amp?
I am thinking, what if I connect Wadia and other DACs to this passive pre-amp and do analog volume control on it, would I see such incredible difference between Wadia and other DACs, or Wadia’s clear advantage will disappear?
