There are a few high-end 2 box (transport and DAC) players by Musical Fidelity, Audio Note, Naim, etc that will give you a lot of flexability. Start with the DAC and add the transport later.

Or get one of the high-end CDP that has digital input for a little less than a 2 box system. You can use the excellent onboard DAC to run your universal player into while still having a great CDP for music. Ayre, Resolution Audio, etc come to mind.
