Here's a thread that I think may open your eyes. Look at my post on the last page comparing this inexpensive, but modded DAC against the Reimyo CDP-777:

Basically, I now think high priced CD players and DAC's may be the biggest scam in audio these days, perhaps after extreme cables. The biggest issue with decent digital is the implementation of the circuits, primarily in the power supply and the analogue sections. The digital boards and associated stuff in many inexpensive players rival many of the extreme players for quality. It's the engineering that goes in around that that seem to make the biggest difference IMO.
