let's be realistic....the point of seriously diminishing returns is about at your sony sacd player which is pretty godo at CD replay.
if you are not happy with the denon playing CDs then add a decent dac from the mid or late 90s like the muse model 2 or ead 7000 or even 9000 (now that's a great source: still available rarely on audiogon for around $1500).
i think hearing differences in transports in a shop would be nearly impossible, and questionable whether those differences would play out in your system.
if you're committed to a single CD player only and are dying to spend that money, I would seriously consider the EAR (deParavinci) rebadged Arcam...that's supposed to be a great sounding player from a designer with a great pair of ears.
Finally, pay attention to AC power cords, component isolation, and inteconnect quality in order to maximize the sound out of the CD player.
