I've been looking into getting a replacement for my Rotel RCD-1072 in the form of a universal player.
This due to the fact I have been introduced to number of SACD titles [practically received a small collection as a gift], and I would like a universal player instead of the CD only Rotel.
I went through the recent thread on the Cambridge 840C against the RCD-1072. While it is completely expected the 840C to be the better machine by a margin [double the price?], it is still a CD-only player.
I have a few choices locally. Some I've listened to:
Denon DCD-1500AE
Marantz SA-7001KI
Didn't really appreciate the sound of Denon. Slightly preffered the sound of the Marantz over my Rotel.
Which brings me to some I haven't listened to:
Marantz DV-7001
I am very intrigued by the DV-7001, but it falls in the 'order-only' category, so I can't listen to it prior to purchase. I am also a bit wary of adding a DVD player essentially to a stereo system, although it is being praised for it's separate audio circuitry.
I would appreciate any thoughts on using this particular unit as a digital frontend. In addition to sound impressions, I am also interested in ease of use without an attached display, loading times etc.
