Hello,
I think you might have mentioned your player a while ago. I had one back in the early '90s and it was a good player for the time and the money. I would not have said that it was particularly bright but mine did thrive on a better DAC.
I would save your money on having it modded. In my second system I have a Marantz CD6000ose that would leave the 965 for dead for sound quality and this Marantz would fetch maybe £25 on ebay and it is low miles and pristine...
So you probably could put your cash into something thats a safer bet.
