Ah, the Melos guy. Didn't realize he was still in the business.
13 years ago I convinced Melos (through a dealer) to mate the
analog box of their two-box MAX-1 D-to-A converter (Philips SAA7350
bitstream DAC in the digital box and tube output stage in the
analog box) to a Theta DS Pro Prime (also SAA7350 DAC chip),
bypassing the Theta's analog section.
A while later, I modified the Theta to run its digital section
off a 12V gel-cell lead-acid wheelchair battery (through a voltage
regulator), and fed it through two Audio Alchemy DTIv2's
(each also battery powered) fed by the digital output
of a Radio Shack Optimus CD-3400 portable CD player (remember
those?) powered by a 6V motorcycle battery.
It didn't sound too shabby!
