I have a Rotel 965BX CD player that has served me well for the last 15 years or so...There's not many hours on it, as over the last 12 years, I rarely listened to the system where it reside...
I've read comments about the 965BX being "bright" and somewhat harsh, and when I bought it, the folks told me that I was buying a transport for the most part, and that an external DAC would be mandatory at some point.
I see where there are some "upgrades/modifications" available for this unit, but I have to ask myself whether it's worth putting $300 or more into 15 year old technology...I have to imagine that significant strides have been made over the years, particularly in the last 15.
If the best route is go go with a new deck, what players would you consider high on our list, that would better my current player in all areas? I'd like to keep the price under $1K if possible. For the record, and a "spacial fanatic," as I love a holographic soundstage and detail, detail, detail. I also don't want something bright or harsh, but rather something reserved and accurate, particularly through the midrange.
