I just purchased a Cambridge 840c, and have been burning it in for the last few days, based on what I've read about the player needing up to 200 hours before it reaches its potential. Anyway, during my listening sessions, I have not noticed the phenomenon you describe. Based on what I'm hearing, the 840c has a very wide soundstage, with instruments spread out across the entire width of my room. Images are more firmly focused than what I was used to with my previous player (modified Jolida 100), but I do not hear the extreme localization of higher frequencies that you describe.
