I agree that NOS probably isn't the last and best design strategy except that it by default follows the minimalist best practice. The question I have with oversampling is how are the DSP algorithms writers voicing there results? How many engineers are musicians or even listen to acoustic music? It seems to me that designers are chasing certain resolution enhancement effects like an increased sense of air and ambient retrieval and maybe corrupting other aspects of the music. I don't know, it was certainly the case with my old player.
