My experience exactly. After my a year-old upsampler began to irritate me more and more as time went by, I built an Audio Note Dac 2.1x kit. The purity of tone is just unbelievable and I don't find it's sound recessed or timid in the least.
The kicker is that it probably measures like crap (see the stereophile review of the Zanden dac) - but it sounds so good. I really believe that digital audio theory has taken a 180 degree turn from real-world practice. Like the misplaced obsession with THD measurements in the 70s and 80s.
