I don't have the 840C, but have seen similar comments regarding the localized high frequencies here. Yet others rave about the unit? Got me thinking as to whether it is inverting phase or effecting something else in your chain of components. Might be worth reversing the leads on one of your speaker terminals to check. Or if you have a Test CD on hand that you can run as an experiment.

Also, if you haven't already, don't forget to experiment with different interconnects.
