it is a transformer which is used to attenuate volume in a transformer volume control. I use an S&B TVC. The difference I am told is that an autoformer has just one winding, while the S&Bs use a primary and secondary winding. Otherwise both attenuate volume similarly.
FYI - the Bent Audio TAP will now use an autoformer instead of S&B transformers as they are no longer available for DIY or other commercial applications with the exception of Music First which S&B owns.
