but I wish it had lower gain and a better volume control. The M24 sounded best as a stand alone DAC for me in my system.

Lynn Olson did run the DAC signal through an autoformer volume control, then looped the signal back to the preamp inputs and got better results. There is some discussion of this on the ClariSonus blog.
