I cannot speak for anything else, but the best I've heard in this well-heeled range was the venerable Wadia 7/9 combination, followed by the Prism DA-2 DAC. (No digital playback had absolute image specificity aside from this Wadia combo.) The Linn CD12 was impressive, but I only heard it in a store. The TOTL Naim is also impressive. Other candidates, which I haven't heard, include the Lavry Gold and Weiss Medea.
