I have been running a CAL Icon MkII with the 20 bit HDCD factory upgrade in my system for years and have really enjoyed it. It is solid, reliable, and sweet-sounding, but I would agree with you that it is not the end-all in terms of resolution. A while ago I got curious and tried a Channel Island VDA-1. I was pleasantly surprised at the improvement across the board. Just recently I upgraded to the VDA-2 with external power supply by the same manufacturer and am loving it even more. I have tried a couple of other DACs in the <$1000 range with the Icon, but in my system nothing yet beats the CI products for the price. You can sometimes find the older unit on the used market, but the VDA-2 seems to be rarer. New ones are available direct from the mfg or through Music Direct. Highly recommended.
. . . in theory, practice and theory are the same; in practice, they are different . . .
