I find it interesting that you recommend both the AN 4.1x and the Naim CD555 when both sound quite different. Both happen to be favorites of mine too. I own a CD 555. I think one can get substantially the same sound from the CD 555 from the CDS3. The jump between the CDX2 and CDS3 is a much bigger jump than that from the CDS3 to the CD 555. To me, the suppposed good "pacing" of the CDX2 is just a bit relentless and mechanical sounding. The CDS3 just sounds more natural (notes bloom in space and decay more naturally). The CD 555 adds more authority and a more expanded soundstage to the mix.
I have only heard the AN 4.1x at a dealer, but, a friend has the DAC 5 signature. That DAC is simply wonderful -- relaxed, organic and musical without being murky and sluggish.
