I find most digital sources have one of two types of personalities: Type 1 (are more about clarity, details, speed, extention, etc.) and Type 2 (do more of the natural timbres, easy flowing, analogish thing). Type 1’s tend to be upsampling based, where type 2’s are NOS or tube based. However, there are exceptions like the Reiymo which uses upsampling, yet has a type 2 personality. As always, the sum of the whole or overall design is often more important than any one individual facet.
Perhaps it’s me, but i don’t hear the same level of tube magic with sources. The differences between tubes and solids with pre / amps are much more distint to me. Sources integrate tubes as either as an output stage or buffer stage. The more common designs being buffered, sound somewhat dis-jointed or lacking cohesiveness. I can’t explain it very well, but the valve part of the sound is not seemless integrated and were more of a detriment, colouring the sound and masking details. You’re maybe better off seeking one with a true tube output stage or a non tube unit with a type 2 personality.
