I had a VRDS T1 transport. After a long time it also skipped tracks. I thought I would have a peep inside.
The laser lives on a sled that is on guide rails. I found these rails to become slightly sticky and that made it hard for the laser to do its job. After some gentle cleaning of the sticky bits... I applied some very light oil on the rails and the laser never skipped again.
Lasted more than 3 years like that,
