Just keep the input and output to the DEQ2496 all digital (optical or coaxial) for best results if you have a separate DAC. I am using the DEQ2496 for my DAC also so it's optical-digital in and analog out. The AKM4393 DAC in the DEQ sounds pretty good to my ears.
You can adjust everything yourself, but the big advantage of the DEQ is it can auto adjust for your room if you get the optional microphone and cable (mic is $50 and cable is about $20). They didn't have the Behringer mic in stock so I got a dbx RTA-M mic for $50 more. Once it has auto-EQ'd, you can then tweak it yourself. It has 64 memories so you can store 64 different EQ curves and name them. You can store the complete state of the DEQ2496 (EVERY setting) or just one of the modules, and it remembers all memory settings when it powers off. It powers up in the same state as it was in when it shut down. I'm telling you, they thought of everything when they designed this box. A steal at $300 and I got mine used for $200!
