I won't get any serious listening time until tomorrow night, but got a little more time in this evening. What I am hearing seems to agree with other SRC2496 users. First of all, I believe the SRC2496 DOES make an improvement over running straight into the DEQ2496. Not only more detail but the sound on some recordings sounds more natural, more 'correct'. But using the DEQ2496 by itself is just fine also if you don't want to spend the extra $130.Sampling rates in order from worst to best now (ignoring 32 and 48),
1. 44.1 kHz - this sounds like the original sound of feeding the CD transport straight into the DEQ2496. Sounds good but there is better yet to come.
2. 88.2 kHz - more detail than 44.1 and a smoother, slightly veiled sound compared to 96.
3. 96 kHz - maximum detail, nothing harsh or artificial, just sounds like the last drop of transparency and detail is being wrung out of the CD. At first I thought it was a bit too much, but going back to 88.2 sounded like some of the detail was smoothed over - veiled but still quite natural. I was surprised there was any difference but there clearly was.
My best solution so far is to lower the EQ curves at 16 and 20 kHz by 0.5 db and use the 96kHz sampling rate. I think the best sound will not be too far off from this. I also raised the gain offset in the DEQ utility menu to from -5db to -3db.
Tomorrow night I will try to do the final selection on CD and then eveluate the analog sound.
UPDATE: after listening some more with the volume turned up, this SRC/DEQ combination is SERIOUSLY good. Best CD playback I have ever heard. Upsampling to 96kHz is definitely the way to go. Completely transparent or as close as my speakers will allow. I look forward to more tomorrow night.
